Congrats on your new sod. Consider that a machine ran over it to get it to you, it was rolled up and transported from a farm, and the people that laid it had to walk on it to put it in place. If you had it professionally installed they would have used a roller to establish the soil contact and soaked it afterwards.
If you had it installed check with the company to find out if they pretreated the soil with any fertilizer. If you installed it try to remember if you added any fert before the operation. This can be key to the success. If the answer is no, purchase a granular 10-10-10 with mineral fertilizer for application in about three weeks.
For the first two weeks water the turf at two inches per week.
Water it with a sprinkler for uniform coverage (if you do not have an irrigation system). Measure the sprinkler output with a cup or pan at the edge of the sprinkler's swath pattern to find out the amount of water per minutes of use. Always water in the morning when possible. For the first two weeks, and at least once a week thereafter, set one day aside for a deep 3/4in of water. The remaining water is spread-out through the week. After two weeks you will need one inch of water per week.
This will cause a major outcry, however, purchase a Certified Grass Seed Mixture. If you or the installer fertilized the soil let it be for six weeks. If it was not fertilized use the granular 10-10-10 with minerals in the third week. Follow the minimum application rate for your spreader. After a week of irrigation I would overseed with my Certified Mixture at a rate of 1lb per 1,000 sq foot. Make sure it is a Certified (Blue Tag) mixture as this has no weeds and a high germination rate.
The 10-10-10 with minerals is a granular fert that is cheap and found at most quality Landscape supply stores. Believe it or not it is also a great addition to the Deicer you may have to use (1/3 the fert-2/3Deice). Set your mower at it's highest cut (3") and cut at that height through to fall.
Apply a fertilizer that is a bit different about two weeks after Labor Day. In this case you will want a "unbalanced" fert. Look on the bag for the numbers 5-20-15, 10-20-10, any with a middle number higher than the first and last. This will help in the root growth. In mid-October use a liquid BroadLeaf killer. On Halloween topseed again. The weekend before Thanksgiving clear the leaves, make a cut at two inches and apply the 10-10-10 with minerals fertilizer.
By next spring you will have had a jump on your neighbors and a full stand of healthy turf. Keep the mower at 3" until June in any year. This reduces the Crabgrass population as it needs direct sunlight to sprout and a high thick turf reduces that potential.
You can walk on your new turf anytime that it is not wet. On the days that you do the deep watering stay off for at least twenty four hours. Stay off of the turf until any broadleaf killer application is dry and until any fertilizer has been subjected to either rain or your irrigation. Professional people play Football Games on Sodded fields three weeks after installation.
I can lay out a full program for you if you wish. You can contact me at gjgjobs@yahoo.com. I will need to know your zone/state and your desire to use any or no chemicals in the turfgrass. Good Luck.

Depends how fast you want to kill it before it even has a chance to overcome the shock of surgery, transplant and re-root! Personally, I'd give it at least 8 weeks or more and preferably never. As for what to put ON IT, that should have been done BEFORE laying the turf after a soil sample suggesting amendments appropriate to what you intended to plant. However, you can still "dig a hole" in your newly laid turf, take a soil sample, send it to your local ag-extension office and based on their analysis, you can "top-dress" with any necessary soil amendments. Your new turf will be very happy about this. Just remember to water appropriately.

Water 1-2" deep daily for several weeks. You can mow when the grass has reached the intended height. This will promote lateral growth. Leave the clippings on the lawn. You can fertilize after 3-4 weeks with a nitrogen fertilizer at the rate of 0.5 pounds per 1000 feet. You can walk on it but don't over-do it until it is established. Do not use herbicides for at least one month. Hand removal of any weeds is recommended during this time.

It needs to be watered thoroughly every day. You shouldn't walk on it for at least a week to allow the new turf to root into the ground. If you need to, use some planks or sheets of wood to spread your weight across a wider area.

You need to put a good fertilizer over it, and water it well for the first week. this helps the roots of the turf bond with the ground it is laid on.You can walk on it anytime.
