Sloppy Joe got it's name from a restaurant in Philadelphia that during the depression served "loose meat" sandwiches because the ingredients were cheap. The name of the restaurant was "Sloppy Joe's" because the owner was named Joe and the sandwiches were sloppy.

Sloppy Joe in real life used to eat a lot of Hormel chili before going down really messily on the missus.

The story is that this guy named Joe fell into the meat grinder and they made sandwiches out of him and it was sloppy so hence the name. That's the true story.

It's partially true. The guy's name was actually Richard that fell in the grinder. They changed the name to Joe to make it more marketable.
