When designing a web site is it possible to begin by using a software package which i'm comfotable with and then making improvements to the web site using a completely seperate, but more advanced software package?
Or do i need to use the same software package from start to finish?

You can create a website however and with whatever you choose. You just need to make sure that the code and the images/other assets are saved in the same place at all times.

You could start off designing your website in Dreamweaver (if you choose) and the document will be saved as an HTML file. You can open up this file in any Text editing program (MS Notepad, OS X TextEdit, etc) and it will display the same code that is inside of your Dreamweaver document. You can also start off handcoding, saving it as an HTML doc and importing it into Dreamweaver/GoLive/etc.

Well, you have just answered it yourself.
Use whatever you are comfortable with.

You can even use a few software packages to design.
At the end of the day, it's the final results that matters.

As long as it's NOT Front Page. Nothing that is saved in Front Page even looks like HTML.

Dream Weaver can strip the crud out of a FP web, but then you can't go back.

Stick with what you know, for now.

You can indeed build in one and edit in another. In fact if you know and understand HTML you can program in NOTEPAD. I often edit pages for designers that dont work with just notepad. Most of the time they simply dont know what the code should be to do what they really want.

LEARN HTML and CSS it will pay very large dividends!
