Before we allowed the mass exodus of industry from the United States, the majority of a generation aspired to factory work. There were very high paying jobs with good benefits for the most part.
Over the past 40 years or so as industry in the US goes through it's death throes, the generations maturing now see the futility of looking for, or even working for large corporations. There are still good jobs to be had, but there is such tough competition for them that any one person's odds of getting one are slim to none.
So what can be done to earn a living?
If you don't want to be a professional, becoming an entrepreneur has an allure with the possibility of an enormous payoff. This mindset has been encouraged by the media most notably television. It's possible to achieve it, but for many it will remain an elusive dream.
