I am living on a lake with my father. Down by the water I have built up two large brush piles for the fish on each side of the dock. I am not really interested in keeping any fish, my goal is to preserve the resource for future generations. Sometimes during the evening I go down there just to watch the fish swim by. I have taken photographs throughout all of the seasons and at just about all of the best times. My old dog still goes swimming everyday and the peacefulness does reward the periods of extreme isolation.

in fishing, some species have size limits. there's also often how many fish you can take per day, such as during trout season, you can only kill 6 trout per day. so if you are catching fish with size limits and limited kills per day, you want to catch and keep decent sized fish. in rare cases, you may have a maximum size limit as well-for example, lobsters. lobsters under or over a certain size must be released. check your area's fish regulations on size and catch limits.
and yes, i've thrown back small fish in hopes of catching larger ones.

We usually keep the small bull heads to use on the river when we set lines. The biggest ive pulled out of a river was 63 pound yellow cat. and it was good eating. But usually i trow small fish back in the pond to get bigger.

I throw back not only little fish but also those big fish that are crap to eat like sailfish, barracuda, sharks, and tarpon. Its better to let fish like that swim free and live to fight another day.

You really have to decide if the one you caught is , Your Big one, or is it still out there...
What happens if your expectations are too high, you throw this one back and then never a bigger one comes along....?
That is your dilemma...Good Luck...
