Networking, establishing connections, and lots & lots of work for little to no pay. My best friend is from a family of media folks and he is still working his way in after several years (and he's got the talent & voice for radio if anybody does). Right now he's only doing spots, bumpers, sometimes weather and/or traffic, etc.

If you wanted a formal college education, Communications is the way to go. Otherwise I would just practice speaking in front of people and being comfortable in front of a microphone. Make connections with your local DJ's by calling in alot, show them that you have a personality, and then apply for an interview using them as references.
