2x = 5x - 3
2x - 2x = 5x - 3 - 2x
0 = 3x - 3
0 + 3 = 3x - 3 + 3
3 = 3x
3 / 3 = 3x / 3
3 / 3 = x
1 = x

The key to answering this kind of question is: BALANCE & HARMONY. These equations are the "Ying Yang" of Maths!. What we do to one side, we must do to the other, keeping it all balanced around the equals sign.
2x = 5x - 3. First, put all the x values onto one-side. Generally for beginners we put all the x terms over to the left and pot all constants on the right. So we are moving the 5x over to be with the 2x. (We take away 5x from both sides)
2x - 5x = -3.
Add the x's togther:
-3x = -3.
Now on the Left hand side we just want x on it's own without the -3. Remember that -3x means -3 multiplied by x so we have to divide -3 on both sides. We get
x = (-3) divide (-3).
You can use you calculator for (-3) divide (-3) or you might just see that it all cancels out to be one.
Finally we get x = 1.
NOW THE MOST IMPORTANT PART, check your answer.
Remember the original equation is 2x = 5x-3. Put x = 1 into the equation wherever you see x. You will see that x = 1 is correct. Checking your answer will increase your comprehension and learning of algebra significantly (aswell as improve your confidence).
Good Luck ...

It's an easy-to-solve equation.
Add 3 to each side:
2x + 3 = 5x
Subtract 2x from each side:
3 = 3x
Divide by 3:
x = 1.
