I got 2 roborovski hamsters 6 months ago. They are both male. We were told in the pet shop that they would get along together since they were brothers. For the first month, one was very shy and the other was outgoing. By the end of the second month, I began to suspect some bullying was going on, and a week later I caught them fighting, so I seperated the two of them.

The one which was really shy came out its shell, while the other previously outgoing one withdrew. He won't come out his cage into his ball, he won't take food from you if you poke it through the cage and he is very skitish. It's nearly impossible to get him out of his cage and into his ball so that I can clean his cage. He always just jumps out and gets loose, and they are so quick that it take almost half an hour to catch him before i can even start cleaning his cage. Is there anything I can do to try to make him a little less skitish? The other hamster is now outgoing and loves to be handles. I wish both were!

Patience and re-assuring that you are not going to be a bully like his brother. Try hand feeding. Alway allow him to get away from you if he wants to, that should make him more confortable and allow him to learn how nice yor are ...

Good luck

That is just pent up frustration the litlle fellah needs a girl friend... Very likely you have an Alpha stud. hamsters are weird they do not care about the sex of their partner. The other little fellah was so relieved when you got the sodomizing brute out of his cage of course he came out of his shell. Either get him neutered or a girl friend and he should be ok.

I have a guinea pig (a teddy). He is awefully shy too. It's just something we have to deal with!! It does have to do with the breed,,you are correct about that. There's something 'to' that adage,,,'shop around',,,find what you want!! Ask the store 'helper' to let you actually hold the hamster so you can get an idea of his 'demeanor', before you buy.

unfortunately this is just your hamsters personality - i know this as i had a guinea pig who are meant to be friendly and all he did was nip me !! even though he was held properly and well cared for. the only thing i would suggest is you make sure your hands are washed after handling the other - they can smell the others scent - this could be making him skitty and handle him twice a day - good luck

Dear ... hamsters are very weak hearted animals... if they are frightened, intimidated or put in a situation that upsets them they might die very easily....

... seperating both of them is not a good idea... leave them together... they will get along eventually.

Take care.

Hamsters are very dumb. They have small brains and people usually keep them because they look cute. Training a hamster not to be shy would be like training a postbox to refuse to accept letters.
