The thing is called the 200im. It's the highest thing you can swim in my summer league. But, i don't want to show off. Should i swim it?

I'd say as long as you have someone else swimming it from your team it won't be as much an issue as showing off since someone else is swimming it but I'd say if you can do it while still swimming other events that your coach puts you in then go for it! It's really satisfying to know that you swam the 200 IM, not many people can finish it (I can finish it but seriously in like 4 minutes!!)

But then again if that's your best placing swim come championship time then I'd say you have no choice but to swim it! I know a kid who for like the whole boy's swimming year only swam the 100 breast once but he became the area league champ of it, the State division champ of it and went on to state open while also breaking the school record. I know he was naturally good at it and the coach was saving him for championship time but that shows that whatever your best at you swim at championship time. If your coach has been putting you in the 100 back but then all of a sudden you find yourself qualifying for states in the 50 free then what're you doing in the water on your starts? You really have to look at yourself and think about what you could really qualify for. Sure, some swims are more fun that others but what swim for you would help out your team the most?

The 200IM is a great race! Go for it!!! By swimming longer distances you're not showing off unless you act obnoxious about it. Sprinters get just as many meet points as distance swimmers so it's not like you're losing a HUGE amount of points if you don't win. Just get in there and enjoy it! The 200IM is the gateway to the 400IM once you're proficient and older.

My theory is if the coach suggest you swim an event, do it. There is a reason he or she chose you and you never know how well you'll do until you try ( =

Good luck!!!

If you think you can, go for it. It's not about showing off.
