Hi

The "vignette" or annual road tax was abandoned for private use some time ago.

The charges for registering a car are interesting.

In the past each departement had different rates. This now seems to be harmonised and the current rates are here :

Hi,
There used to be a tax for cars but it exists no more since 2001, I think (at least for private cars).
However, you have to pay a toll if you wish to drive on (most)motorways. The price depends on the distance and the company which manages the motorway network.

It depends on the "fiscal horsepower" of the car - known as the "CV" in France - which is calculated based on CO2 emissions and peak power output.
I believe it is levied at departmental level, so the actual amount paid also depends on where in France you live.
