It is an MMORPG, which stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.
It does require an internet connection, and can only be played online. Character data is stored on Blizzard's servers.
If you want a game that is somewhat similar, but offline, you could try The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, which is currently available for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC. (Although for PC, you will likely need a nice, powerful gaming computer to play it with pretty graphics settings.)

WoW is an MMORPG, you need to be online to play it. If you wanna play offline, you need to install the Warcraft RPG game version like The Frozen Throne edition.

An internet connection and subscription is required to play WoW.
However, you can "emulate" a server at home. Granted, this is frowned upon by Blizzard, but the ability to do it is there.
