Sure, some people are so in their ego-space that they don't think they can ever get out, so they take pleasure in pain. Seen it many, many times.

I think people gravitate to this type of news because it makes them feel better about their own lives ...knowing that others are worse off.

Many people are annoyed whenever they see happiness that is not theirs. Shallow, envious people.
