I want to go to Florida to see my family, i would fly but i want to have a car while i'm down there but being that i am only 20 i cannot rent one. So i am thinking about driving down there, Mapquest says it should take like 18 hours. Is it a good idea to take this long trip by myself?

Sure. I have driven back and forth across the country by myself, starting at age 19. It's very interesting. Get lots of maps, bring snacks, carry a cooler in the car with ice and drinks (non-alcoholic, of course) and plan to stay the night somewhere along the way, South Carolina, maybe.

You'll see a lot of things. Have fun!

I drive from Richmond to Florida every year sometimes more than once. It is a great drive without a toll all the way to florida.

From Richmond to Jacksonville is 9 - 10 hours stopping to eat once. From Jacksonville then it is a couple of hours to Orlando, add 2 more to Tampa. To Miami is about 370 miles from jacksonville with the keys being a couple of more hours.

Word of caution if driving down I-95 is to take the beltway around jacksonville as they have construction and this tip alone could save you hours.

Forget mapquest (sorry yahoo). Use Rand Mcnally.

Don't trust map quest. It is wrong more often than not. Do the trip. I have driven New Hampshire to Florida solo many times.

I don't see 18 hours. 2 /12 all of VA, 2 1/2 NC, 2 1/2 SC, 1 1/2 GA. That is 9 hours tops from the tip of VA near DC to the Florida border on 95.

I think it'd be a great experience for you. Make sure you check your fluid levels and tire pressure. I hope you have insurance than can tow your car if you have trouble, and money in reserve for a hotel/motel room or repairs.
BEWARE OF MAPQUEST DIRECTIONS!!!
I've been steered the wrong way too many times by Mapquest. Take a look at a good, old-fashioned, paper road-map.

18 hours is only one day so why not make the trip. I sure you will enjoy it.
