Same as it is everywhere.
Women are able to live without the income of men.
They have also adjusted to the notion that they are people and not their husband's property. The days of wife as chattel are on the way out. Its finally catching up to India. It will take a number of generations for men to figure out that they cannot command their wives. Until then the lucky ones will escape via divorce.

" Too much parental care and consumerist affection normally
makes a boy or girl selfish in disposition with an unbridled craving to gain maximum attention. This personal craving often robs away the dyadic interaction between person and society.
The concept of ego becomes superfluous and larger than life.
Ego attains paramountcy at the expense of society and the values of society get debased.
In such a social process-an outcome of inadequate and stunted socialisation-the persona gets alienated and estranged from his or her surrounding nature, neighbourhood,
family and perhaps from his or her own self.In such a process the altar gets divorced from the ego-so very current in many
modern psyches. This may be a major reason why a newly
married girl finds it difficult to adjust to her new familial roles.
Similarly a boy, after realising that many of his wishes and
dreams are not getting fulfilled, begin distancing himself
from the so-called unified mind of his wife.
The dreams and wishes of marriage get bizarre leading to the divorce of the altar and the ego-which is vitrtually
inevitable in the psyche of the members belonging to a nuclear family, where too much parental care and affection
are making a child go astray-judging by the standardised
expectation of the society.
THE CULTURE OF PLAIN LIVING AND HIGH THINKING NEEDS TO BE REVIVED.

All the reasons given by various people here are all correct & are reasons for divorce, but the most important reason no one pointed out is adjustment in matrimonial home by the couples. When these two unite to start a matrimonial home they have to adjust to so many issues concerning both personally as well socially, any lack of understanding & adjustment lead to bitterness in their life which increase with time & results into divorce. I will say its both who are for one reason or other responsible for the misunderstanding & maladjustment & we cannot blame any one for this. As an individual you can live as you like but with a spouse you have to live as both of you want to live, it means mutual consent for each & every decision even if it is of routine form. Let every couple follow the principle of mutual love, understanding & adjustment ,there will not be any divorce, even if external interferences, opinions, & misunderstandings are brought between them they will sail smoothly in a successful matrimonial home. This is my personal principle which is based on my 25 years successful experience in a matrimonial home.

Lack of understanding and true commitment in relationships are the reasons.Marriage is a contract where man and woman sign as equals. The rights and duties of one over the other has to be properly understood. What we see on screen is all made up.If we fail to see how good our spouse is it is because of our expectations based on what we see on screen.Proper understanding will bring in commitment in a relationship.
