Short Answer:
We do not currently have a workable and/or realistic exit strategy. And since its so open ended, people want to get out now before we lose more people and money on something with no tangible reward.

Long Answer:
As with the most modern day police action... conflict... war.. whatever... The initial thrust into the conflict was with a set objective in mind. "Defeating a hostile government and its supporting army.". Once that objective had been accomplished, the realities of the situation set in:

If you remove the leadership of an enemy state, when you leave that state, you create a void, and in to that void ANYONE can potentially become the new leader, and very few of the potential leaders will have positive feelings towards the victors.

Now we are stuck, attempting to setup of a government in a country where the former hostile army, foreign dissidents and other destabilizing influences have entered into the general population, and actively hampering the creation of a new government.

This is not what the American people were promised. There were no parades by the Iraqi's celebrating their freedom from a hostile oppressive dictator. No mass declaration of the Iraqi people's hearts and minds rejoicing the saving of their lives. There was no rush of honest and true Iraqi statesmen; coming to the forefront ready to create a new government on a moments notice.

What we got was a morass. A large number of groups fighting to be on top of the heap so they can start oppressing those that they feel oppressed them in the past. Or groups that want to return to the good old days when they could oppress the ones that they have feel are inferior to them... Yes, there are some altruist leaders in Iraq, people who have the good of all Iraqi's in their hearts and goals: They are assassinated almost as fast as they get elected or appointed.

The American population was not prepared for this. Those people who declaimed this as the probable outcome were ignored, and in certain cases ridiculed.

But look at it from a historical perspective. In the past, after a major war campaign, there were 2 major options for the victors:

1) Pillage and leave: This leaves the conquered people to attempt to rebuild all their infrastructure and government from the ground up, with little to no assets remaining in the country beyond people. This would limit the ability to retaliate on the victors for many years. After all, you cant feed your people on bullets.

2) Subjugation/Imperialism: This means taking over the country entirely. Installing your own rulers, laws, morality, religion etc. The victors would enslave or remove all the subjugated people from any positions of power and confiscate all the land and assets. You can control the people through the use of force or by the threat of denial.. (No food for your village till you plow and plant those fields, if you do not do this, your children will starve and it will be your fault!)

But in out "enlightened" times we do not have those options. We did not pillage and leave, and we did not invade with intentions of annexing the country and enforcing our beliefs and culture.

What we needed was a third option: A prepared government with prepared laws ready to go in and take over. Tight control of the borders. An international coalition prepared to act as a police force. And finally a set of prepared civilian projects to incorporate the population in to the restructuring of the government.

Or maybe something else entirely... I leave that up to you to devise.

1)Because the war is over...this is an occupation..why do people not get that?

2)Because it is right thing to do

3)Because by not having one we announce to world "America declares itself an absolute monarchy and rightful emperor of the world and you will all be conquered"

4) I just have too much respect for freedom and democracy I guess to ignore that vast majority of country wants our troops back.

Now what I find very interesting is that in America, the land of freedom and democracy, when it was put to people and people responded those in charge said "wrong answer, F U, we will do what we want now you go behind the woodshed and be quiet".

The news media and the presidential wanna be candidates are all on the same band wagon. Bash the sitting president and try to garner support for themselves among the wanna be candidates. The media is just looking for something for ratings. If the media could have gotten into Virginia Tech and taken a photo of every person who was shot and gotten film coverage of each body being taken out they would have put every bit of that on TV in their feeding frenzy at Virginia Tech.

The media hasn't realized that all these threats since Virginia Tech are a direct result of their feeding frenzy and crazies wanting to get publicity. It doesn't matter if it is undermining the country or if it is apt to get students killed, lets get those ratings up.

Undermining what? The quagmire in Iraq? Not much to blame on this end unless you want to throw around useless labels such as liberal or conservative to make yourself feel better. Pathetic... In a war with EVER CHANGING initiating factors, we lost it before it began. Now we want to increase the divide in a country by segregating those within it? ABSURD. Iraq overshadows Vietnam's infamy just the same as Bush has now surpassed Nixon's blunders and fallacies. Welcome to the WORST president EVER. He can not speak, he doesn't write his own speeches, just like many of his worthless counterparts of the latter part of the 20th century. He can not think for himself, he blames everyone for his actions. 100% in one direction until it becomes unfavorable then its someone else's fault for "talking him into it" and full steam with another worthless velocity towards the most appeasing direction. The man is a joke and it has now rubbed off on Americas image on the world scene. As though everything political can be summed up by labeling one as "conservative" or "liberal", then you inept parrots preach the bullshit as though it was condoned by Jesus himself (assuming you're Christian). What...a...joke. Next time you respond to something do it without using pointless labels, you only make yourself less credible and appear as pathetic as you probably are. Bravo, "Shaz". The OCCUPATION must end NOW. They don't want it, our government wants only to protect their recently acquired oil reserves...
