all depends what you mean by best.
Best current batsman in the world according to ICC ranking for ODIs is Kevin Pieterson
Best current batsman for Tests according to ICC is Ponting
Best current bowler for ODIs accorindg to ICC: Pollock
Best current bowler for tests accorindg to ICC: Muttiah Muralitharan
apparently they use some complicated formula with different factors to determine who is the best.
Now if you are just talking about the 2007 WC: Hayden is the leading run scorer with 580, so is probably why most people are saying Hayden. Although Ponting is not far behind with 480 (and he did not get to beat up on bangaldesh since he had a DNB).
Most wickets is McGrath with 22 but Muralitharan is 2nd with 19 and has missed a game.
Now if you mean ALL TIME: (all opinion based)
Batsman: Test - Bradman
ODI - Ponting
Bowler: Test - W. Akram
ODI - W. Akram
but all time is too subjective.... so many ppl can be argued its insane.

In the game of cricket, both batsmen and bowler have crucial role to play. Hence I strongly feel that when one decide who is the best cricketer in the world, we have to categorise best batsman and the best bowler. According to me best batsman as per records is Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara and the best bowler is M. Muralitharan. However, since Sachin and Lara have been out of form in the recent past, if you consider who is the best batsman today, it will be Ricky Ponting.

Ricky Ponting (number 14) is definitely the best cricketer in the world, He is fantastic in the field outstanding with the bat. he is the best.
