you can buy a pedal, there are overdrive, metal, distortion etc. If you are recording into your P.C look for a plugin called amblitude or make sure you get a pedal or FX board with a cabinet emulator. Your amp may have two volume controls or a channel switch, you turn up the first to overdrive the second. (make sure you turn the second nob down a bit!)

If you alrady know this, when you are playing in your bedroom you may turn dow the Mid Knob but when recording or playing live the mids are really impartant. also when recording dont use too much distortion or it will sound reall muddy find a balance between a good feel and a good sound.

go here and listen to the song "Crazy things i do" (crank it up loud) and hear the distortion i got from a zoom pedal with an emulator

technique also counts for a lot, palm muting and also tuning down your fat e string to a D can help, most metal playes tune their whole guitar down to get a real fat sound (beware it doesnt always sound good unless you have really heavy strings)

Distortion pedal. They're like fingerprints...no two are alike. You;ll need to experiment to find one you like.
