I am surprised that a 1992 engine would use leaded fuel. But if this is truly the case, then yes, unleaded fuel will damage an engine designed for leaded fuel. The lead in fuel was meant to lubricate the engine in addition to the motor oil.
However, if you mean that he put unleaded gasoline into a diesel engine, then yes, that too will damage the engine. A complete engine rebuild is likely required at this point.

A car that takes leaded fuel will have a slight difference in the fuel air ration and this may be the cause of the sluggish performance. However leaded fuel has lead as a additive to the fuel that acts as a lubricant for the valves. If the engine is run for an extended period it is possible to cause damage to the valves. If the take is full of fuel you can purchase a lead replacement additive from your local auto spares shop.

If its an engine requiring leaded fuel and you put unleaded in it, the engine should be ok, just don't do it again.
I have a 67 Chevelle. Those cars were all made to run on leaded gas. No leaded gas for sale anymore here in the US, so you have to use unleaded gas. The car runs fine.
If your car was serviced 7,000km ago, it sounds like it is time for servicing.
Maybe the gas he put in it was dirty too. Try to change the fuel filter.

My suggestion is to take it in for a service and explain it to the mechanic my boyfriend thinks it would not hurt it but he knows more about the older cars than the newer cars.

I seriously doubt any '92 car was made to run on leaded fuel.

It really shouldnt make a difference, but if you are that concerned you can purchase a lead additive from any parts store.
