I find that chocolate is the best bait for a rat trap wether it is the humane cage type or the snapper type.
Put it in a dark spot along side a wall so that the rat has to swerve to avoid it as they like to run along side walls for safety.

When you set up the "Rat nite club," be sure to put some peanut butter at the entrance, they love it! MY boyfriend found this out the potentially costly way. He was leaving for work and he noticed things were messed up in his car. He looked in the glove compartment and there it was, A RAT! This rodent chewed up the leather on his stick shift, and shredded his title, registration, etc. to make a bed out of it! We called the "Rat catchers", and they suggested peanut butter. So we put a trap down with it, and we got it. Didn't want the poor thing to die in vain so we gave it to the crows! I would not have allowed this trapping, but we tried everything else for days. We also know of someone (not an isolated incident) who had a brand new sports car, and a rat got in his transmisson and chewed up the wiring, and it cost this guy Thousands of dollars for repairs! Seriously, why not take the advice and just go to the pet store to avoid any future rat incidences!!! :) If you think this question is funny, look under birds, and click on the question that starts "Why iz." I had a belly laugh!!!

if it is a mouse, glue traps work very well - just make sure you put it along the paths it takes; your problem will be how to dispose of it;
but you described it as a rat so it must be large; I hear rats love peanuts; you can use peanuts as bait, esp if they are roasted; you can put the peanuts in a bottle (the body as well as the neck and mouth) that has a width just a little larger than the body of the rat - this way, the rat can go it to eat but cannot back out nor can it turn around;

The very best way to get rid of rats is to get a dog. We live in the countryside and often get rats from the fields on our garden but when we got a dog we never saw a rat again. Once we got a rat in my stable so we shot it.

You must use DECON brand firstly,,you must put it where she'llfind it (put it where you see her droppings). Do not use with a trap,,,just let her go off and die,,borrow a nieghbors cat to go find her and pull her dead body to you for disposal. Hopefully she'll die in a spot convenient fo the cat to get her!!
Good luck,,,to prevent further infestations,,,do not ever let a rodent detect food,,,ie,,,always keep food secured tightly so animals can't detect it.
