Would help if printer make and model were stated but GENERALLY for USB printers the installer will say part way through "connect to USB now"
Is printer actually being detected by the PC on connection ? Is there an old version of the driver lingering about ?
Disconnect printer, in start / settings / printers right click your printer and properties, go to the ports tab and click the tick box for LPT1 ( I know it's USB but bear with me) and untick the USB port it's currently using.
click any USB ports in turn and click DELETE PORT (don't worry they reinstall themselves as needed)
Close dialog box and uninstall printer driver, or at least right click the printer in printer folder and select DELETE.
NOW reinstall driver and follow prompts. Could simply be printer driver looking at wrong USB "virtual port" so it couldn't communicate with printer (common problem esp if you've unplugged printer at some point)
IF you ever move a printers USB port and it reinstalls a new copy of the driver, go into properties of "new copy" and check the USB port it's using. then go to old driver and untick existing USB port and retick the one the new driver was using, you can now delete new copy of driver and re-use old one.
Been there done that SO OFTEN with newer colour lasers on USB as a printer engineer . . .
Now

Un-plug the printer>Un-install all drivers and software> power down and re-boot.

(1) Load the software and drivers in FIRST
(2) Now plug the printer in and All will be well.

Don't try it the other way round as the software has to go on to the system first before the printer is connected.

you should uninstall it, disconnect it, and then reinstall it and connect it when it tells you to. After that, go to the printer manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers for your printer model.
