whats a crossover cable? i need one to connect my laptop to my desktop to network them and have my desktop use the wireless internet that my laptop is picking up. i have a blue ethernet cable with all this(etl verified to tia/eia 568-a cat.5e---utp) and i have 2 small cables that came with my computers that look like they are black phone cords(what are they?) do i have to go to a computer shop and find a crossover cable?

yes it is my wireless router and the adapter that came with it wont pickup the signal yet my laptop(built in wifi) will which is why i want to network them. my desktop is vista. both my comps are side by side and i dont know why the adapter wont pick up the signal but the laptop will.

You need to buy a cross-over cable. The way you phrase this indicates the wireless Internet is not your own, if so you will be breaking the law to do this unless you get the owner's permission. This can carry a prison sentence, 2 machines will carry much heavier penalties than a single theft of service. If it is your own wireless you could simply add a wireless card to the desktop.

Crossover cables are twisted which allows a single cable to connect 2 computers only, most will use a hub or switch that allows the translation automatically, as they are so cheap, you may be better off getting a router, this allows you to share the internet connection, as well as network all your computers using normal CAT5 cables, rather than spending money on a single crossover cable.

the only physical difference is that the order of the wires inside the ends are different.
