Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'll bet the anti-virus you installed was Norton (Symantec), Norton, although somewhat effective is commonly referred to as "bloatware," it can drastically slow your computer. You may want to ty a different anti-virus program if this is the case, I had Norton, and couldn't believe the difference when I switched. Also, increasing the memory won't hurt, Vista runs better with at least 1gb.

Most computer users have been trained that if you want more speed for your computer, then add more memory. Well, this is true, in certain circumstances. But for most of the times, it really is just bad files in your registry files. Corrupted or missing registry files can make your computer too slow.
Any time you make a change to any of your computers settings and surfing online, they are stored and updated in the registry.Over time,the registry can grow to enormous proportions and full of junk and errors.So if you run a program,it will take a long time to required registry file and sometime it cant find its registry files since regsitry errors and then it has to sit there.So your computer will slow or freezing.
To speed up your computer,you need to fix your registry files. And I guarantee you have errors in the registry files that cause computer slow.Fixing these errors will dramatically increase the speed of your computer.Sometimes can up to 300% or more! All you need to do is run a registry repair software called registry cleaner, and get your Windows registry cleaned up and optimized. Registry cleaner not only can clean registry files,registry errors,but also can clean temp files,history and other disk junk.You will no longer have a slow computer.

Now you can check out http://www.computerspeed.info/index.php?t=speed2 ,there are reviews of top rated registry cleaners and a clear guide to tell you how to speed up your computer.And from there you also can get a free scan to fix any problems such as computers slow,computer freezing, computer errors and getting the blue death screen.
Hope that can help you.

Yes, Vista needs at least 1GB of memory to run ok, some PCs are normally ship with 2GB just to make Vista run the same speed as XP.

One problem is running Vista on 512 RAM. I recommend running atleast a 1G, or switch to XP.

Vista need RAM at least 1 GB, more relly. Heck I using 1 GB with Linux and that a lot.
BUT, if you have some Jump Drives doing nothing, plug them in and use for your virtual memory.
I think this link explain about Jump Drives, it faster than your HDD;
