We use pine. I had a pig die once from an abcess that formed from a slinter it got insid its mouth when it chewed on the hard wood we used to make its box, since then we've only ever used pine for all my pig cages because its a soft wood and safer. We do need to replace it around every 18 mths to 2 yrs thoght becaus pine deteriates if used out doors.

a guinea pig shouldn't not be enclosed ina wood box! his home should be wire,,,otherwise he'll develope cataracs. inside the wire house a wooden room is very preferable because they like to go into solitude once ina while. This 'room' should be 1/2 inch well sanded pine board with 2 doors (and 'in' and an 'out'). My guinea pig thrives in his environment I have just discribed. Talk to your local pet store about buying this type of cage for your critter.
I also want to 'touch' on bedding,,,use paper bags on the bottom,,then red (courser) chips,,then the softer pine bedding for the top layer,,,after 3 days,,put another layer of pine bedding in the cage (for santary reasons).
In the winter,,,I put a little rug in the cage and keep it brushed off for him. It stays 'in place' because 2 ends of it are tucked under his 'cubby wooden room'. He prefers to lay on it,,vs the chips. I really spoil my guinea pig,,,he's as big as a football,,and always smiling,,,he's 4 now,,,never been sick or hurt! One more thing,,,we do a total cage change weekly! All but the paper bags,,,go right into the garden compost! (rug get's tossed out too)
