My husband had this about two years ago. You need physical therapy. It's the only thing that will get it back where it belongs and alleviate the pain. They'll give you exercises specifically for the type of hernia you have and where it is along the spine. Though, since your sciatic nerve is being pinched, then you have it pretty much where my husband had his. His PT taught me how to do a particular stretch on him.

He would lay on his stomach with a pillow under his tummy/hips area. I would kneel straddling his hips, lean over and place both hands on his spine just above the very tip of his tail bone. Then slowly I'd apply pressure (elbows locked, like I was doing CPR), ease off for a few seconds, then reapply the pressure. I did this about 5 - 7 times in a session, holding the pressure for about 4 or 5 seconds at a time.

I wouldn't recommend having someone try doing this to you unless they were specifically advised by the PT.

I sympathize with you greatly. I know you must be in a great deal of pain. : ( After about 6 or 8 weeks of physical therapy, my husband's bulging disk was set back where it belongs and he hasn't had any problems since.

Good luck to you.

I ruptured a disc at L4-5 that was misdiagnosed for so long that I now have permanent nerve damage and chronic sciatica. I did have surgery but that caused scar tissue to form around the nerve root, so that contributes to my pain as well. I have tried nerve pain meds, narcotic pain meds, steroid injections, chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy etc... and nothing really helps. I have learned to just deal with the pain and have built up a high tolerance to it. I am currently 33 and I have dealt with this for the past 14 years. My suggestion... keep walking, but do not run. Keep your exercise as low impact as possible and swim if that is at all possible. Also, do not hesitate to see your doctor if you feel that your condition is getting worse. I know most people do not like the idea of surgery, but if that bulging disc ruptures you want it fixed asap. Things have changed a lot since I had my back surgery and they can do much less invasive procedures that will allow you to recover much more quickly. When did you have diagnostic testing done last? If it's been more than a year, ask for them again just to be sure things have not changed. I know what you are going through and I wish you the best.

Ack, that sucks! I have some minor sciatica myself and the thing I've found that works the best is Iyengar Yoga and exercise. I do have it mildly enough that I can still exercise, but the yoga has helped a lot. I do Iyengar because it is very focused on alignment and it is very good for injuries. I am fairly analytical about trying to figure out what works because I'm a scientist. I have noticed significant improvement from the Yoga. The big difference between my sciatica though is that mine is due to some crunching in my sacrum, not bulging discs. My co-worker with bulging discs and sciatica said that yoga used to help, but now she is too stressed out (which is aggravating the sciatica) and strapped for cash, to go anymore. She's got a special needs child which takes ALL her time.

I do think that the flexibility and awareness of your body can't hurt as long as you are SUPER careful not to do anything that hurts. All yoga is not equal, so find a *studio* not a gym, and make sure they are practicing good alignment and hopefully Iyengar.... Just type Iyengar and your area into a search engine and you should find a studio hopefully. Good luck.

I've been battling sciatica for close to a decade, after a minor car accident, and I had tried everything the doc threw at mepills, injections, special mattresses This guide was extremely eye opening and within one week of the regimen you gave me I can barely feel any discomfort. You have no idea how much of a relief it is to be finally getting rid of a pain I've had to bear for so many years.
