To our American cousins. I understand you are concerned about your freedom, your rights.
But don´t you think stricter gun control laws might be the way to go.
For example, this weeks Economist suggested :
"child-proof locks",
"system of registration for guns and gun-owners"
"wider blacklist of those ineligible to buy them"
And hey, enough with the cheap jokes about our terrible teeth!

More restrictions only means it will be harder for law abiding citizens to get weapons. Criminals do not follow laws.

It seems to me that this topic comes up after every mass killing, and, of course, nothing is done about gun control. Probably because this Pandora's box was opened looong ago. It appears the way to go now is to do what they do in Spain and Italy and several other European countries. That is, have armed guards all over the place. America has thousands of ex military men with tons of experience in weapons and fighting. Find the ones that are still mentally stable, and give them jobs in all the schools, hospitals, court houses, government buildings and anywhere else that needs protection. It won't stop these nut jobs from attemping something, but I'm pretty sure they won't rack up such a high body count!

My dear friend , stricter gun laws only hurt law abiding citizens , very rarely do the criminals try to obtain legal guns through the proper channels , as far as child proof locks , you can not use the gun in a life or death situation if their is a lock on it , your killer will not give you time to find the key , he may if you ask him politely .. all 13 of my guns are registered to me , bought legally , the reason I have so many is if someone picks me as a target they had best pack a lunch for the day because it will take awhile, each gun has over 500 rounds at all times in high capacity magizines . I have children in my home , they know I have guns , they know they will get their *ss whipped if they ever touch them , all of them are very well informed on gun safety ,and what to do if they ever find one outside of the home , they are never left home alone or without proper supervision ,( the 15 year old boy needs it more than the 8 or 12 year old ), I do not hunt , I shoot for fun such as targets in my yard , I can shoot day or night ,and it is not considered disturbing the peace, my neighbors know who does the shooting , and they do not mind at all , sometimes they come over to shoot the guns.
The problem is not from a lack of gun control , but it is from lack of child control , and parental responsibilities , such as the Virginia Tech shooting , the parents of the shooter knew their son had mental issues , but allowed him to live on his own with no supervision , chances are they probably never taught him how to mind , most kids today are catered to , they are not taught the word no , and do not comprehend rejection..I guess because mom ,and dad always say yes, and give in to the child , the child grows up to think since mom ,and dad bow down to me , and allow me to have my way , then everyone one else will do the same. One of our bright leaders in the past thought the old assault weapons ban was a good thing , and it was because only the criminals had assault weapons , now that we can once again own ,and buy assault weapons the killing rate has actually decreased , If someone wants another dead they will get them with or without a gun . It is not the guns my friend, it is just bad parents , and those bad parents now want to blame TV , and video games , I play those so called bad games with my son , he has been taught that it is just a game , or it is just TV , and neither one has anything to do with reality .Bad Parents make bad people . guns do not.. Blame the parents , instead of gun laws , they need to make it a crime to not properly raise and teach their kids the difference between make believe , and real life.....as far as the teeth , there are just as many here with bad teeth mommy ,and daddy did not teach them hygine either....
AND lastly .. I have great gun control ..it is called hitting my target ...

It is not the guns that kill people , it is the people that kill people. When you hear of someone being stabbed to death, you never hear a bunch of people blaming the knife, that would just be really stupid, yet they think that it is smart to blame a gun? IF guns are outlawed, the outlaws will be the only ones to have guns. I believe that the law abiding people of America have the right to own a gun if they want to. Criminals will always find a way to get guns, so outlawing them or making stricter laws are not the answers. We need to raise better people. Our children need to be taught to value human lives. By the way this was not an American.

What would that solve? would stricter home made bomb vest laws have prevented the tube train bombings in London? If the college security rules had made it mandatory for lecturers or somebody in each college building to be armed, the killer wouldn't have been able to shoot so many victims. The Swiss keep guns in their homes by law, and their country is safe. All the recent UK killings have been committed with illegally held weapons.

Gun control doesn't work. And besides, guns are not the problem. A gun cannot kill a person. A gun is a tool. Only a person can kill a person.

Also, look at the statistics. England, Australia, Ireland, etc. all have strict gun control laws. Yes, they have fewer homicides but they have historically had lower murder rates than the United States. But if you look at their OVERALL crime it is skyrocketing. Rapes, armed robbery, assault and even murder is on the rise in these countries while in the United States these trends are going down. Overall violent crime has consistently gone down year after year.

As for "gun registration" simply look at the history of it. Mao, Stalin, Hilter, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Kim Jong-il, Castro and Qaddafi have all instituted gun control/registration laws. If you look at just Stalin, Hilter and Mao their gun registration laws lead to the deaths of over 132 million people. History only proves that gun registration/gun control leads to more deaths.

Second, SHUT UP! I'm sick and tired of hearing "child locks" and "gun registration" and blah, blah, blah! Look, I'm only going to say this once so get this through your thick head:

CRIMINALS DO NOT OBEY GUN LAWS! GUN CONTROL ONLY DISARMS LAW ABIDING CITIZENS!

Why do you people think that by taking guns away from law abiding, good citizens, that gun violence will fall? Law abiding citizens are not out committing murder. The average Joe on the street has no interest in killing someone. 99.99999% of people who buy a gun are not going to go out and shoot someone just because they have a gun. A gun is a tool. It is a means of protection. If you take guns away from law abiding citizens only the criminals will have guns.

Why is this so hard to understand? People who obey the laws would by the very definition of law abiding citizens would not own guns. Criminals, by definition, would still OWN guns! They will ignore gun control laws because a gun makes their job a lot easier.

Law abiding citizens who have no desire to go out and smoke some guy just because buy their guns at gun stores where a background check is run.

Criminals on the other hand buy their guns from some guy in an apartment (flat), out of a trunk (boot) or in an alley way. They do not obey the laws so what makes you think they would obey gun laws?

So now you've taken someones guns away. A person who has no desire to kill anyone. A person who only wants a gun for protection. Now he is disarmed. But a criminal who just spent $600 buying a Glock 19 out of a guys trunk breaks into the law abiding disarmed citizens home and robs them at gun point. Or perhaps he breaks into a womans home and rapes her aided by his brand new Glock 19. If that woman was allowed to own a gun that rapist would be dead and she wouldn't be a victim.

Say what you want but the police can't and won't save you when someone is trying to kill you. The only person that can stop a crime is the victim. And if the victim has no way to fight back they are powerless.

You got it? Do you understand simple logic? Try using your brain for once.

We already have those laws. If I want to buy a gun the the State of New Jersey, I need a permit to purchase. That permit is only given out after and exhaustive backround check. Child-proof locks are becoming obsolete with finger id hardware on guns. With it, only the person registered to use the gun is capable of firing it. This will not stop a "Cho" from buying and using a gun.

Most of those suggestions are already in place. Unfortunately, they do nothing to stop the suicidal madman with a clean record.

The biggest problem isn't a lack of laws, its a lack of enforcement and proper execution. The VT killer wouldn't have been able to buy a gun had it not been for various technicalities that kept the temporary restraining orders and the history of unstable behavior off his record.

Stricter gun control laws is why all those died at VT with no defense.

That and fat assed cops with bullet proof vests and guns hiding behind trees and cars for their own safety, wondering if they'll get free catering service and over-time pay if they milk this all day.

Don't expect these useless cowardly pigs to protect you and serve.

Just count on them to take you to jail for driving on an outstanding ticket to serve 6 months in jail for driving on a suspended licence.

This is the gov you pay your hard earned tax dollars to.

Protect Yourself!!! No-one else does.

gun control does not work , just look at what happened in the U.K. all legally held hand guns were banned , gun clubs shut down and now gun crime is at an all time high

taking guns from "regular" people does not reduce crime

as far as America is concerned maybe , just maybe , the massacre at the university would not have been so bad if the students and teachers were not banned from having guns on the campus ,

the bad guys ALWAYS are going to get guns,

more strict gun laws will make it near impossible for decent people to get the gun to defend themselves..

just enforce the laws already in the books!!

one more thing: if just one of those teachers in VT, or perhaps one of the students in that classroom would have had a gun, and be able to fight back we would not have had 33 dead!! perhaps 2 or 3 but not 33!!!

think about it!
