If you are receiving disability from SS, I don't think it matters. If you are receiving SSI,then yes, your benefits will most likely be taken away since that is a program based on your income.
Benefits paid from SS do not have to be paid back. I'm not sure about SSI,it could be possible I guess.

If you report the inheritance, SSI and SSD will stop sending you your allowance until you can prove you spent the inheritance, if it's over a certain amount, depending on the state you live in. There are several ways to go around this. One is to have the money put in a special trust fund for you. Another is to put the money in a checking account then buy traveler's checks. These can always be replaced if they are lost or stolen. You may also place the inheritance in a trusted person's checking account. Never put the money in a savings account; a checking account is legal. Don't get a credit card, get a debit card and use it for both debit and credit. It's best to use cash in the long run. Also, talk to a lawyer or an advocate who specializes in disability.

No. people who are disabled and receive disability benefits do so because they paid into disability insurance. Disability benefits are not a hand out.
