Nuclear reactions occurring in the the earth and the forces of gravity. The crust and lithosphere act like a blanket which keeps most of the heat in. Some radioisotopes have extremely long half lives and takes many hundreds of millions of years to decompose. In the break down the the radioactive nulcei energy is released. This is found in the magma. The core of the earth, is liquefied. It is under extreme forces of gravity. It is hot. This heat then goes into the magma from the materials deep down in the earth.

Magma was hot to begin with because the Earth started off as a hot ball of molten rock. The crust (the part we stand on every day) cooled over time but the core of the planet is still very hot. Also the magma is constantly moving, causing friction, which keeps the magma near the crust from cooling off too much.

Its like negative feedback. Magma rises up because its hot. As it rises up temperature gets cooler thus making it also cold. Magma that doesn't go to the earth's surface are plutonic rocks (like batholith and dikes). Magma that goes onto the surface is lava or volcanic rocks.

its hot because its coming from the flaming bowels of the earth... wen it surfaces and starts cooling, then it forms a kind of layer over itself which gets cooled down and keeps the magma inside hot... hence it cools very slowly
