I think I may have my first yeast infection. I'm 19 and sexually active. Myself and my partner have been tested. It is not an STD. I have no medical insurance, so would really prefer not to go to the gyno because of the bill. If I use the OTC yeast infection treatments, will they work? What is the best one to use?

Thanks in advance!

First get your self an over the counter remedy for the immediate pain (like monostat.) You can also take a soothing bath and mix in some Hydrogen peroxide to help with the sting. Sounds weird but it works. If you can get a prescription ask for Diflucan; it starts working in one day.

To continue to make sure that you avoid further yeast infections you can take Acidophilus (found in the vitamin section of your pharmacy.) It is a healthy type of bacteria that will balance out Candida overgrowth (the reason why you have an infection in the first place.) Also (as blunt as this is) make sure to urinate RIGHT after sex (don't wait); this is the best way to clean out your body of foreign bacteria.

Wait to have sex until the infection has cleared up.

Monitstat 7 is very effective. Used to be available by RX only. Comes in a cream (with an applicator), or vaginal suppositories. Although the suppositories are less messy, I always found the cream more effective. And you need to use it for 7 nights straight. No skipping. Use pantyliners or light kotex pads during the day; for practical reasons. Also, since you are sexually active, ideally your boyfriend should be treated as well with an antibiotic, but since money's a problem, this problem will likely reoccur by him transferring it back to you. So the only solution for that now is to use condoms. PS. I did forget to mention that Monistat 7 has a generic equivalent available at a cheaper price which is just as effective. Walgreens and Wal-Mart chain stores have the largest selections for yeast infection cures.

If your infection is serious, you may require antibiotics. But you can treat a yeast infection by practicing good hygiene. Try Lactacyd Female Hygiene Wash, do not wear too tight clothing, wear cotton undergarments are all good ways to prevent infection. Lastly, try to avoid food that are too cold or food with high sugary contents. Good luck :)

I have found the only one that truly works is the 7 day cream available in name brand or generic. I always buy the generic brand at Walmart. Try eating lots of yogurt also. This sounds really weird but works great. if you are really irritated on the outside, you can put PLAIN yogurt on it (cover your underwear with a pantyliner), and you will have instant relief. it also seems to make the itching and burning go away much faster. That's one miserable infection, so good luck and don't delay treament, it only gets more miserable!

I would use Monistat. You can choose anywhere from a 1 day, 3 day or 7 day treatment. To get rid of it the fastest use Monistat 1. And at walmart there is an off brand equate that works just at well and is probably a few bucks cheaper. You may want to use it before you go to bed at night, and make sure you use a panty liner. The treatment is kinda messy but it works.

go to your local pharmacist---or one in another town. Listen, my young friend. Don't be embarassed. THEY HAVE HEARD IT BEFORE. Lots of people have a penis or a vagina that has something itchy or yucky. It happens to lots of people. Just go to a pharmacy, tell the pharmacist what's up, and he/she will hook you up. Relax. You are not the first person to experience this. You won't be the last.

Have you taken an antibiotic recently? That leaves ladies open to all kindsa stuff...be honest and upfront with the pharmacist, or...his recommendation will be useless.

There are creams you can find in the pharmacies and drugstores for this purpose. But I'm not sure about the names.ask them and they will help you.
