It is called homophobia wrapped around religion and ignorance, but it also comes down to the perceived threat to the "manhood" and the perceived insult to men if a woman does not want them because she is gay and vice versa even though it tends to be more vitriolic among men.
They will ignore you if you are not blatant with it but if you are, be prepared to die, no exaggeration.
I grew up being told that being gay was a sin and if you were you would go to hell. I knew gays when I was growing up there but I can tell you the climate from the 80's until now has not changed. Gay rights activists cannot be obvious with their work, it will cost them dearly as was the case 18 months ago with a gay rights activist being murdered because of his orientation.
I remember in the 1990's, people wanted to have a gay pride parade there and they were told " go ahead but don't be surprised if they get shot".
Personally, I think because of the religious zealotry and homophobia in not realizing that it is not catching and it cannot be beaten out of people tends to keep Jamaicans on the d.l. which in turn has them sneaking around, getting sick, afraid to let people know and thus infecting the women they are with.

I think it is mostly based on the popultaion being very religious and being gay is against their religion. Ignorant or intolerant as that may be many
Caribe nations are either against gays or they are pretty tolerant, there seems to be no middle ground.
