Do a 70 percent water change with tap water. Well water contains sulfur, and is quite harmful to the stuff living inside your aquarium (not to mention serious discoloration of water). From now on, use the tap and ditch the well.

The difference between city water and well water is often city is treated with numerous chemicals which can be a mixed blessing. I miss the crisp taste of well water but I do recall having a similar problem long ago when I raised fish on the farm.

You need to go to a pet store and either one purchase alge fish or snails or two purchase chemicals that will neturalize the algie content in the water. Speak with your local pet specialist and they should be able to help you out.

By using well water you are having higher mineral contents than you would find in treated water. Be vary careful as this is also a transition time for your own fish.

If you're certain it's not algae it might be cyanobacteria. See photo: http://www.aquamax.de/Shop/Artikelbilder/Zusatzbilder/Algen%20im%20Aquarium_Blaualgen%20-%20Cyanobacteria_STUG_cyano1.jpg

This is a bacteria rather than an algae, so traditional algae cures won't work that well - and fish and snails won't eat it. You can treat it with an antibiotic (erythromycin), and I've heard of copper being used to eliminate it, but these are measures I'd use last. The first will destroy your beneficial bacteria (biological filter) and if you keep snails, plants, or sensitive fish, they may not like the copper.

Here's a website that gives biological means of control such as pH, water movement, and nutrient control that I'd try first: http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/algae/cyano.shtml

Is your tank freshwater or saltwater?
