Here's the thing this particular machine is a clasic case of manufactures trying to create "good numbers" it does have 1 gig, but it is shared with onboard video, as well as the on board sound sharing a small part of the cpu. and all these periphels "sharring" causes additional traffic and ultimately creatng a less efficient machine. I would start by getting a new video card.

semi-serious gaming - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143071
Then i would "clean up" the machine, i could draw out this answer to a small novel with all the ways that can be done, instead here is a product that can do it for you. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832334050
i think it is well worth the investment.
and adding memory will always boost pc performance to some degree, maybe add a additional 1 gig. (2 gig total)
also you could add a independant sound card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102003
if there is a available space you could also add a fan (cooler pc's run faster) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999703
in addition to a fan you could replace the large "ribbon" cables with round ones to allow better air flow.

Dells are know for running hot, i think because they try to keep them quite, therefor less airflow.

your notebook comes from dell, i'm confident it is loaded with **** from their enterprise like a "helper" and stuff... attempt checking which courses run interior the history to loose RAM, people who say that having somewhat some records or no longer having somewhat some area interior the HD are incorrect, the stressfulchronic slows down while records are fragmented merely... As I stated earlier, attempt disabling utility that runs on startup which you do no longer honestly choose...

First of all, partition your hard drive. If it is one gigantic hard drive as drive C: that will slow down your computer...
Also, uninstall any unnecessary software as it generally will bloat the registry and sit around in resident memory
Lastly, keep your computer in a cool place... processors run better when they are not so hot.

Help boost your computer speed.
Hello. My name is Ms. Dell and it is my pleasure to assist you.
Open IE7 ( Internet explore 7) which is your browser and click on TOOLS located to the upper right and then select INTERNET OPTIONS......... There, you will see many buttons. Click on DELETE, then you’ll be taken to where you can either DELETE FILES, DELETE HISTORY, DELETE FORMS, DELETE PASSWORDS AND DELETE ALL.
I highly recommend you to delete your files, history, forms and cookies. Then close that box and then click on OK located to the bottom.
Are you tired? Please keep walking with me:
Delete some of your software that you don't need.
Click on START then CONTROL PANEL then ADD/REMOVE.
There, you will see a bunch of items listed. Search for the one you wish to remove and single click on it, then right next to the software you wish to remove, click CHANGE/REMOVE and choose to remove the software.
Let's drink some coffee for a while.
Ok. Next step:
Disk clean up:
Click on START located to the bottom left on your computer screen and point your mouse cursor over ALL PROGRAMS. Then search for ACCESSORIES and click on SYSTEM TOOLS. Then click on Disk Clean up. After it has completed, run disk Defragment.

throw it out of a moving car...
Seriously ---
add more RAM, defrag HDD, dump cache, upgrade some major parts (CPU, Grfx Card), and uninstall all the old junk -
A clean install of XP will make it a virtually new system.
Just give it a good house-cleaning and next time....DONT BUY A DuLL.
