what are you trying to do? simplify?

break it up , remember denominator applies to both terms of the numerator.

[x^2 *y] / [xy] + x/[xy]

x + 1/y

first break it up into (x squared y)/(xy) + (x)/(xy)

then cancel your terms

yields

x + (1/y)
