I mean, when did this practice start? Or have people always had to do it?

Since McDonald's Restaurants opened their doors!
From day one people were instructed to clear their tables into the bins provided. Before then; customers to any restaurant just up and left.
McDonald's were also the first to hire "hostesses" in the eating area to assist people and to help customers clean up if necessary.
It was a good idea but McDonald's still hire "hostesses" to assist customers in keeping the eating are clean and tidy.

I ALWAYS put the rubbish in the bin. At least the table is clear for the next customers if it is busy and the cleaners can't get there in time to wipe it clean. The cleaners are there to make sure the tables and chairs are wiped down and clean and tidy but they shouldn't have to clear away your rubbish as well. You don't leave dirty plates on your table at home so why do that outside? Are you so lazy that you can't pick up and put away you own rubbish? It is a good habit to have. (When I say "you" I mean collective "you"' not YOU the asker)

If the establishment has trash bins with tray stacks on top it is customary to dump your items and stack your tray. However, it is not considered an obligation and for some people who might be elderly or handicapped there are the employees who have table duty and pick up after later. The bottom line is being considerate to those who work there.

Since the beginning of fast food restaurants. It helps keep them FAST food as their employees can focus on getting the food up and not cleaning up.

Since fast food started signs went up saying please clean up after yourself. That of course only works for the people who can read and for the people who have manners. As it's a fast food place you have a tendency to have a lack of people who fall into both those catagories.

if you leave it there, honestly, that's just being lazy. It also makes it hard on us employees. (i work in fast food.)-- we always wonder, what does there HOME look like?! just clean it up, its easy ;3

I don't know when it started, I just do it most of the time to avoid being a careless, inconsiderate slob.
