It's not there for no reason. It keeps the genital area clean, especially in women. It also traps pheromones which are a type of hormones that attract mates.

The pubic hair is there to retain or trap the odors (pheromones)that are secreted from the base of the hair follicles.It is also thought to act as "advertising",it says I am mature enough.

Actually ive heard the main use for it is to keep the pheremones secreted by the woman there so that the male will be more attracted. It may help to protect from bacteria but it really doesn't help that much, and since we arent primitive animals we dont really need it for the pheremones anymore as we once did perhaps. This is why it is safe to shave/wax it all off.

Hair grows under your arms because of lymph nodes, to keep them warmer. I have to guess that's why the pubic hair is there for. Because you have lymph nodes there too.
