I think it's dubiously political. We'll have lot of troops there untill Bush finish his term. He can leave his office saying 'I did everything I could.' And if something goes wrong after he leaves he can blame the next president. But in reality it is Bush administration that set everything up for the failure; planning of the war or lack of planning, bad decisions after initial 2003 invasion...etc.

Iraqi violence may last very long time no matter when we leave, but it doesn't mean it'll fall into al Quida's hand. Muqtada al Sadr is probably greater threat than al Quida threat in Iraq. Al Quida is some what scattered organization, but Shiite cleric al Sadr have firm foundation & followers in Iraq.

Try quick search with 'Shiite Crescent.'

Are you talking about the war in Iraq? The question isn't clear. I wish that news were true. What happens after we leave? I think the Sunni and Shia will form their own militias to protect their own neighborhoods/areas and will be safer than they are now. It won't be a united country, but they'll be better off by taking care of their own. The Kurds have been doing that and are living a much safer and more stable life in the north of Iraq.

As far as a vacuum being formed due to lack of a national government, I don't know how that will be sorted out. I don't think Iran can just move in, or any of the Arab states. Perhaps they'll break it into three countries, like happened with Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia had a "strong man', dictator like Sadam Hussein keeping the country united. After the Soviet Union fell and Yugoslavia couldn't be forced to stay united, it separated into Bosnia, Montenegro, and Slovakia. (I think that's right). Maybe Iraq will do the same.

They wont pull completely out, they still will remain a presence to secure the country of further happenings, and with Iran starting there stuff, we will be around awhile.
