Had an artificial bird house in the tree with a nest. Went outside yesterday and found 3 dead (about 4 week old) chicks on the ground nearby. I guess they escaped the same way the mother bird got in, from the bottom. I was so sad. Heard chirping and discovered one left alive. Took all the nesting material and put in an empty bluebird house (the sparrows raise about 3 broods in it every year) and within 10-15 minutes, a male and female sparrow were reinforcing the nest. Last evening, went to check on the baby and out flew a female but she went right back as soon as I left.
Even though I had success, don't ever try this with a song bird because you can get in a lot of trouble tampering with it or its young. English Sparrows are considered nuisance birds.
I know why I was successful with this chick but I have observed these birds and their habits for years and don't want anyone to be misled.

This is a true story but several days since has had a tragic ending.
