it really depends on the dyno test. If the engine is outside the car it will give you Hp torque and even fuel consumption rate of an engine. At Ford we used to put cars on a "road simulator" where you could check top speed and 1/4 mile times as well. Sorta like when tyou see the car ads that say these are EPA estimates your actual gas mileage may vary. Just ike any other lab experiment lab test are just that. Lab test and do not tak into account altitude, wind, road surface etc, all of which can effect 1/4 mile times and top speed in the real world. I remember at a drag strip that one year they turned around the direction and everyones times were faster. They never realised a track that looked as flat as a pancake was actually on a hill. They were now racing down hill.

Dyno testing is the method whereby the horsepower of a given engine is determined. It will NOT supply the top speed, nor the 1/4 mile time; those are both variables that are affected by temperature, wind, traction, gearing and a host of other items.

In general, a dyno test measures the HP and torque of a car at the drive axle through its range of RPMs and gears. Thus, the maximum RPM and max torque can be determined in order to verify/compare manufacturer's claimed numbers, and/or test the effects of various performance-enhancing mods.

kiffin and kasey are right but it also tells you where the weak spot is if its going to break it will then
to find the hp andtorque they have to put the engine under full load at different rpms
most are done with hydraulics to load the engine
some with friction
and some with electric motors
some measure with the engine out of the car and bolted to a stand
and some are done with the engine in the car by tying the car down and checking it at the wheels

A dyno test will find out a cars maximum horsepower and it will tell you at what RPM range that it is in.

heres a sick video of a Viper on a dyno
