I am stumped on this question. If anyone could give me some pointers or advice I would appreciate it a ton!

In the benzilic acid rearrangement reaction (benzil -> benzillic acid), the side product diphenylmethanol is somtimes formed. Suggest a possible mechanism for its formation.

I don't need the exact mechanism, but a few pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The diphenylmethyl ion is sterically hindered and has a relatively large stabilisation energy.

I suppose the answer can not be as simple as "incomplete reaction"?
