Brand isn't the most important factor although I recommend HP/Compaq because of their proven dependability. Just make sure you get at least 1GB of Memory (the more the merrier) and at least 100GB and for a pretty good price you can get one with 160GB. Honestly, just check all the weekend ads at all the stores and you should be able to find one at a great price. With those specs I think you can get one for $600 or under and they're really nice laptops.

Just go to futureshop and look around :) Toshiba usually have pretty good deals. You probably won't need a lot of fancy programs and whatnot, but you might care about the speed of your laptop. A lot of cheap laptops that are advertised are REALLY SLOW, so just pay attention to that.

theese guys are all wrong...just startin school your going to need somthing verry upgradeable..id say 3gig max ram and you want the dim ram not sd ram ..storage get a 250gig hard drive and iv always trust hp's.only get one gig ram to start with and id get a good size gig of a external hard drive it will keep junk off your pc which will keep it runnung fast plus with the external its eayser to back up all your homework
