Taking 10 as the least common denominator

18 1/2=18 1/2 x 5/5=18 5/10
+15 4/5=15 4/5 x2/2= 15 8/10
18 5/10+15 8/10= 33 13/10
13/10=1 3/10
33 + 1/ 3/10= 34 3/10

1. find the common denominator. In this case, it is 10, because the 2 denominators (2, 5) multiplied = 10. apply to the fractions. it will look like this:

18 5/10 + 15 8/10 = ?

2. multiply the whole #'s by the denominators on each fraction and then add the remainder numerators. This will give you another fraction, but will be the same thing as the previous one. this is the result:

185/10 + 158/10 = ?

(Or you can add the whole numbers, 18 and 15.)

33 13/10 --> simplify --> 34 3/10

If you take this step, it is over. If you multiplied the whole numbers by the denominator and added the remainders, the next step will guide you through the end process.
3. Add the numerators together and simplify. It will look like this:

343/10 --> simplified--> 34.3 --> in a fraction --> 34 3/10

Hope that helps! :)

18 1/2 + 15 4/5
multiply the 1/2 by 5 (2x5=10) to get 5/10
multiply 4/5 by 2 (5x2=10) to get 8/10
18 5/10 + 15 8/10= 33 13/10
33 13/10 = 34 3/10

you have to convert them to the same denominator first in order to add them

you probably know this, but for a number with format
a b/c is equivalent to ((a*c)+b)/c

for the first number, 18 1/2 = ((18*2)+1) / 2 = 37/2
for the second number, 15 4/5 = ((15*5)+4)/5 = 79/5

the smallest common multiple for the denominator is 10.

so, for the first number, if you want to make the denominator = 10, you have to multiply it by 5/5. the numerator will have to be multiplied with the same number as the denominator so that the value stays the same because a/a = 1.

the first number = 37/2 * 5/5 = 185/10
second number = 79/5 * 2/2 = 158/10

then you can add them because they have same denominator
(185+158)/10 = 343/10

which is equivalent to 34 3/10

hope this helps!

-find the LCD of 2 and 5 [denominators]
LCD: 10

-change the fractions so that it fits these denominators
18 1/2 = 18 5/10
15 4/5 = 15 8/10

-then add them together
33 13/10

-reduce
34 3/10

hope this helped!!!!! ^_^
