My two cents...
Sony *usually* uses higher quality components. Everything is also more streamlined (and lighter). However, Sony Vaio's (laptops) are more expensive.
Dell gets a bad rap, but they're starting to make better computers.
Both companies have horrible customer service/tech support.
If you configure a Sony and a Dell with the same components (same brand/speed of CPU, video card, etc), the Sony will still cost more. However, as I mentioned, Sony uses higher quality parts (lcd screen, wiring, etc).
I've owned both a Sony & a Dell laptop. If you want my honet opinion, I'll recommend Sony over Dell any day of the week.
Regardless of the brand, choose a computer that is right for you (as almost any laptop these days will be able to fill the needs of most average home users).
As for upgrading your current laptop's hard drive & RAM, just be sure you know what you need.
To elaborate:
Know what type of hard drive you need. There's ATA (also known as IDE), and there is SATA. Most older laptops have ATA hard drives. So make sure you buy the right type.
Know the type of RAM you need (there are different speeds), and also how much RAM your computer can support (512Mb, 1 gig, 2 gig, etc).
To find this out, look in your manual/spec guide. Or you can just do a keyword search on the Internet. Maybe enter something like "your computer model +RAM". There are sites out there where you can enter in your pc make and model and it will tell you how much RAM and what type/speed RAM your pc requires.
Lastly, if you decide to upgrade your hard drive and memory, be sure to remove the laptop's battery. Also, wear an anti-static wrist strap (or something else which can diffuse static electricity).

If your current laptop can perform all the tasks you need it to do, then just upgrade the RAM and hard drive. If have a need for a more powerful, faster computer go for it. As for which laptop manufacture is better, well that's a toss up. Just look for the model that gives you the Most Bang for your Buck.

We have had both in laptops. The Dell has been 100% trouble free while my Husband's sony was always crashing (he ended up buying a new HP). He paid lots more for his too, than I did for my Dell. Dell has great prices, awesome customer service, and wonderful warranty options. I say Dell wins handsover, and will now be the only brand I'll ever buy.

Sony machines are built for people who automatically equate expensive price tags for good performance. Pretty much their entire product line is mediocre at best. I'm not going to say that any of the VAIO laptops are bad per se, but they're needlessly overpriced for what you're getting. In this case, Dell will be able to build you a machine that performs the same at a cheaper price.

I think that you should have Dell build you a Sony computer, so that way you save money with Dell, but get a Sony quality computer. Makes sense to me.
