How do we know that Mary had a little lamb?

Maybe it was big, or maybe it was not a lamb at all.

I dont think it was a lamb at all! I think it was a flesh eating, baby Hydra!
And the teacher didn't have time to tell her, "Lock him up, lock him up, lock him up!" One of the heads had eaten her up before she could get it out!
I also think that the new teacher was always praising Mary for her quick thinking and intelligent answers.

Mary is a popular name. There are many families that own sheep. It is highly probable that a child named Mary would indeed own a little lamb, at least for a while. especially when you look at the problem over a period of centuries.

Of course, it is likely that the rhyme is about Mary having the Lamb of God, Jesus.

Read this carefully...

Mary had a little lamb, whos fleece was white as snow
and everwhere that mary went, her lamb was sure to go.

The lamb was detailed and described well. Meaning there actually was a lamb that was little. There is nothing there that says that it wasn't a lamb. Another that the lamb follows her everywhere, anybody could have seen it.

Mary did, in fact, have a little lamb. And that's what she gets for sleeping in the stable.

Rhyme says it was 'little' and we have believed it since childhood.
If it was big, it would not have followed Mary everywhere.
Also the pic that went with the Rhyme said so: that the lamb was little.
