leaks and sometimes squealing. when the engine gets warm (hot) do you ever hear the fan(s) come on. the water pump is only part of the system. with out the fan, you loose the ability to pass air through the radiator at slow speeds or at a stop.
you can test this a couple of ways. 1 let the car run for a while and just wait for the temp to get to hot and see if the fans work.
2 start the car and turn on the ac. part of the ac control actually bypasses the cooling fan controls and just runs the fans constantly.

I'd start with the thermostat. It is the cheapest and can make the car overheat. Go ahead and back flush the system and clean the radiator at the same time. The hoses should be hard since the system is pressurized. The water heater will generally make some noise since the bearings going out is the reason for failure.

Your hoses should be solid or hard when the motor is warmed up. So if your motor is still overheating try flushing your raditor, a new therostat, and if those do not work you may have a blown head gasket or a corroeded block which is very very rare.

i own a repair shop and usually the water wont circulate real good and this causes them to not cool as good, they also will run a little warmer all the time, and you may occasionally see leaks coming from it those are the most common symptoms of one going bad,if you pull it off you may notice a lot of wear on the impeller part of it ,unless its a Chevy and there closed off,but most of the time they will just run hotter all the time ,that's the easiest way to diagnose one unless its leaking and then its obvious ,its bad, good luck with it hope this helps.
