College is not anything like high school. Not even close.
When I was in HS I could just breeze through, no need to study, I could put off assignments til the last minute, etc. If I missed assignments I could just talk to the teacher and hand them in late, no points taken. I have professors that drop you down an entire grade if it is late.
College is harder. You are more independant. The best way to explain it is the way it was explained to me when I was going to start. "In HS when they[teacher] will assign you chapter 2 to read for homework, the next day the class work will be reading through chapter two."
In college you are assigned chapters to read and homework problems. Professors could often times care less if you do it. Expect to get assignments and the professor will come in the next class and ask if there were any questions on the hw, if not they move on. No spending 15-20 min going over the problems. Which may seem great, but you will quickly fall behind if you do not read and do the work.
In college you are a grown up, professors don't care if you come to class(not going to call home, etc) They just drop you down a grade, etc. It's your responsibiltiy to keep up. Professors hand you a syllabis with everything you are doing for the semester(projects, hw, reading) For the most part they are not going to remind you projects are comming due. Or expect you to hand in outlines of papers to be corrected and to make sure you are doing the paper and managing your time.
Work is harder, expect to spend at least 2-3 hours a week per class reading, studying, doing assignments. That is if you want good grades, and are serious. You could spend your time fooling around, but your grades will suffer.
It the small things that add up to a big difference. I personally believe that HS's should do a bit better in preparing students for college.
Don't get me wrong I don't hate going to college, especially since I am 2 weeks away from graduating! All the work and time seem worth it now, as before they didn't. But remember college is not for everyone and there is no shame in not going, just be sure that is what you want.

I graduated from college last June, and for me college was a lot different than high school. In high school I was able to maintain a high GPA and pretty much breeze through school without trying much. Community college was also fairly easy, but there was more work and it took some actual studying to do well.
At the university level classes were much harder and this surprised me at first. By this point I was in upper level classes because I transferred from community college, and these classes took a lot more effort than I was accustomed to.
Think of it this way, college is where all the best students from all the high schools end up, so if you are the "smart kid" in your high school you will be surrounded with the "smart kids" from all the other high schools, not just the slackers that make up much of the class.
Although tougher than high school it’s still easy enough to adapt to college, and it is a lot more fun. The people are smarter, there is more to do, more responsibility, freedom from parents and lots of people to meet.
You will meet people from all over the state\country\world at college and you can learn and discuss new ideas with them. College is not as "clicky" as high school, but it does have obvious social groups.
Be open minded and have fun, just make sure to do well in class and you can party on the weekends.
Remember, there is a time and a place for everything, and it’s called college.

a typical HS day is 9 classes or periods, with 1 of them that is lunch.
Ususally each class/period is 40 minutes. When i was in HS, i had school from 730 to 2:04pm.
AP classes are much harder.
Free time is lunch time which is usually one of the periods in the middle for lunch.
HS is not very hard if you stay prepared and organized. Organization is the KEY! rememer that all the time to stay organized.
from 9th to 11th grade, you'll most likely be carry most of teh burden, but 12th grade is alot easier.
most of the times, 9th, 10th and 11th grades will have 8 classes plus 1 lunch, while 12th grade students might have only 5 classes and 3 free periods.

college?? man i freaking hate it. It is nothing like high school. It does have its benefits though. It teaches you how to manage your time, how to be independent, nobody is watching over you constantly making sure you do your homework. There isnt alot of homework for most classes but there is ALOT of reading and studying. LOTS AND LOTS of studying. I spend most of my time studying. It is very difficult to keep a GPA over 3.0, depending on your major. Some majors are easier than others. Classes suck most of the time and you dont want to go to class. But you dont have to if you dont want to, but it is better that you do, your spending thousands of dollars to go to a class that you probably wont like. If you want to go out you can pretty much do what you want when you want, the question is should you. If your grades arn't important to you then you can go out as often as your funds will allow. If however you do care about your grades then you wont be getting out very much, unless you are an absolute genius who doesnt need to study. I have between 2 and 3 classes a day. It doesnt seem like a lot, but there is so much studying involved its crazy. High School is a cake walk compared to college.

College is a party with some classes thrown in. It depends solely on you. What do you want? Where do you want to be in four years? It's not hard and its not easy, just don't quit. It's also a place for meeting all sorts of new people....some will become your friends for life while others are simply there to amuse you while you work through the studies.
