I am a widow. I went to a new doctor today and on the form the question for marital status had only two choices: Single or Married. I left it blank. The girl at the desk called me up and pointed it out. I said I am a widow, then she said "that makes you single" and checked the box on the form.
Is this true, did I become single when my husband died? If anything, I feel more married than single.

Wow... that girl sounds insensitive, I would have asked for a new form and marked married just to let her know that it's your decision. I'm so sorry for your loss, hopefully you will find comfort and maybe even a new love one day if thats what you want.

not really an answer, but after my son died (3 1/2 days old) my ex g/f still had to attend parenting classes. during the very first class, the instructor said, "by show of hands, how many are breastfeeding? now, how many bottle-feeding?" then she looked at my ex, and said, loud and rude, "what's the matter with you? dont you feed your baby?" my ex just started to cry, and finally was able to say, "my baby died!" apparently, there was no box to check for this, on official county govt. forms, as if no baby had EVER died before? when she came out to the car, where i was waiting, she was so upset, and i would have gone into that class and ripped that b*tch's head off, but my ex said no! so, we just left.

If a form I'm filling out doesn't have the choice for me, I usually mark them out and write my answer beside it. I don't think you became single when your husband died, because marriage is more than rings and words--it's a feeling, a connection.

Just write "decline to state".
I have seen married or single on forms. You are married if you were ever married. The receptionist has it wrong.
That is why there is no answer for divorced, as well.
When the marriage is ended, you were still married.

Actually....Your first sentence is correct. Your a widow. But if "single" and "married" are the only 2 choices.....I guess single it is. (Although I might have penciled in "Widow").

Given the "on-off" choice you were given, you are single. Only a single person can get legally married, and you, unquestionably can get married legally to (nearly) anyone you like in most states. Like me, single, married, single, married, single again.

First of all, so very sorry for your loss, I feel your doctors office was wrong, I would of made my own little box and written in widowed...

It's actually what you feel more comfortable with. My grandma always said married after her hubby died and never referred to herself as single. My aunt said married for several months after her husbands death, and when she was ready to move on, became single.

By law, you are not married to him. But I think, in a way, you'll always be emotionally married to this guy. I'm sorry for your loss!
