I believe that you could hire a lawyer to act on your behalf in court. If you have a lawyer there, you may not have to show up unless the judge orders you to.

jellybeanchick is pretty much right, I think, but if I was in your shoes I would just call the court. You should be able to speak to somebody who can tell you all about the procedural requirements for your hearing, and what the options are for you.
