my brakes on my truck are squeaking, but when I put on the brakes, it doesn't do it anymore. I was told that we needed new brakes, but I don't think so. Any ideas what else might be wrong

If they're squeaking when your not on the brakes it's possible that they do need changed. There's a small device on some brake pads that makes a squeaking noise when the pad gets thin. The only way to know for sure is pull off one of the tires and look at the pads.If they look thin they need changed.

I'm not a brake specialist, but sometimes when the brakes squeal when you're not braking it means that the rotors are out of round and may need to be corrected by a brake shop. Best to take the vehicle to a good shop to get them fixed...no sense risking an accident if you can help it.

leading cause of squealing brakes is brake dust. if its the front brakes, try a garden hose, just wash the disk area, the drums are a little more difficult, jack the back end up, remove the wheels and brakes, and dump out the brake dust into a suitable container. reassemble and test drive.

if it is when you stop they stop squeakin check your shocks they might be a little old... from the bumps in the road it would of course put preassure on them and since they are old and need replacing they would squeak
