My little sister struggles with sleep problems and different methods work for different people, but I tell her to relax each muscle slowly from your feet to your head and neck and just feel your body relaxing.
Also, stretching or taking 10 mins to relax before sleeping can help because an overractive mind can make it hard to sleep.
I think this link will be very helpful as you can see which method works for you:

I've struggled with insomnia for years, but lately I have been sleeping much better so hopefully I can help.
What has worked best for me is to exercise regularly, even when I'm tired, and to limit my television watching, especially before bed. I was surprised by how much of an effect not watching tv late at night had. I used to fall asleep on the couch watching tv and then stumble to bed. Then later, when I couldn't sleep I would have to go back to the couch and watch movies, infomercials, or whatever happened to be on until I feel asleep again. Now that I've broken the cycle, I sleep much better.
I would also recommend taking melatonin, which is available over the counter. It mimics the chemicals your brain produces to induce sleep, but it will only work if you put yourself in a relaxing, sleep-like situation right after taking it. Now that I have a handle on my problem, I only take it when I really need to get a good night sleep and I'm afraid I will lie awaking thinking about stuff. I try to not to use it every night, because I worry that if I take it every night my brain would stop producing this chemical on its own. (Please note, I've never found anything to support this concern.)
Some other tips--
1. Avoid caffeine after lunch time.
2. Don't use your bed for anything but sleep. Don't pay bills, talk on the phone, watch tv, etc. while laying in bed. I've heard you're not even supposed to read in bed, but I do sometimes. The point is that you are supposed to associate only sleep with your bed. I've also read that if you are tossing and turning for longer than 30 minutes, get up and do something else, like read a book in another room. Again, this is so you associate your bed with sleep, not tossing and turning.
3. Try taking a bath with Johnson&Johnson's Bedtime Bath. It is designed for "fussy babies," but it usually knocks me out.
Sweet dreams!

Kava is relaxing but I like valerian for sleep. It smells like dirty socks, but it works and has been used in Europe forever. The Sleepytime tea mentioned before is good. Scullcap is also a good herb. I sometimes use a Solaray product called "Sleep blend sp-17" which I got at my grocery store. Works well. Stay away from caffeine later in the day, especially power drinks, exercise earlier in the day, eat a light meal for early dinner without a lot of protein in it, remove TV's from your room, turn off computer early on, do some reading around bedtime, reduce stress, keep your bed and bedroom a sanctuary for rest. No alcohol for at least two hours before sleep, and no more than two drinks.

Insomnia is often caused by fear, stress, anxiety, medications, herbs, caffeine, depression or sometimes for no apparent reason. Make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark. Soak a tablespoon of mint leaves in a cup of water for an hour, drink every night. Check out http://useinfo-insomnia.blogspot.com/ for more info

Since I am an alternative person I use various methods.
Usually I take 1mg. sublingual ( under the tongue ) melatonin 1/2 hour before bed, and I sleep like a baby.
Or you could try a valarian root pill before bed.
I myself would prefer to stay away from prescription sleeping pills as they are hard on the liver.

You can use a combination of the following herbs: Valerian root, Chamomile, hops, passion flower. These herbs help you relax and are non-habit forming. You can also take melatonin 3mg maximum in 24 hours.
Take a multi vitamin and mineral everyday to create balance in your body and to reduce everyday stress.

Echo ech is right. Also:
1] avoid alcohol - it disrupts your sleep cycle
2] don't do anything 'important' when you can't sleep - like paying bills. Try something that doesn't require brains, like folding laundry or cleaning out closets
3] Know your limits - do not drive if you are seriously sleep deprived - get someone to help you out!
