. i put a down payment on a car, drove off lot but did not take possesion of car? is contract valid in calif?

If you made a down payment and drove it off the lot, how is it that you didn't take possession??
when you drove it off the lot, it was yours, unless there's something you aren't telling us. I assume you had to sign the paperwork before you drove. I will also assume it was a sales contract, that you signed.
