You should really learn more about music. Metallica are true legends, far more than any of the other bands you mentioned. You probably haven't heard enough Metallica to know that you don't like this type of music. You just said you like Nirvana, and Nirvana is much "noisier" than Metallica's.
Add a 100 million album selling, 7 grammy winner band to your iPod and add Metallica's Black Album. For your taste, I think you'd also enjoy some music from Metallica's S&M album. Specially the award winning instrumental performance of "Call of Ktulu". And if you really want a world-class collection worthy of knowledgeable music-lovers, you should also add the classic albums "Master of Puppets" and "And Justice For All".
PS: Don't EVER mention Metallica and Kelly Clarkson in the same sentence. Someone might kill you (by accident, of course). ;-p

Emma it would helps us out to know how old you are. Some of the answers are of music you may be to young to like or understand why they are great music.
Try music by Nickelback. I have their newest cd and it is pretty good. I like the songs off the radio. The rest of the songs on the cd are a little more rock then I like. Linkin Park is an awesome group. I am suprized that my mother likes them so much. Most adults 40 and older do not like them and my mom is 54. Bob Dylan is awesome. He has done a lot of music. My favorite song by him is Mr. Tambourine Man. Rolling Stone is another great one by him.
Other groups to try are Good Charlotte, Green Day,The Killers, Sum 41, Evanescence, Simple Plan, Slipknot, Staind, Goo Dolls, 3 Doors Down, and Incubus. Most of these bands I do not listen too. The only three I like are Goo Dolls, The Killers, and Evanescence. I own the first Evanescence cd and it is really good. I went to http://www.ask.com and typed in the name of some of the groups you like and on the left side there is a section titled Expand Your Search and other band names came up that I have heard of before that I thought you may like.
I hope this helped out.

I strongly suggest wiping the iPod and getting REAL music. Go buy a Pixies CD, or Radiohead, Blur, Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, Oasis... whatever. Trust me, it will help.

My three favorites are Matt Wertz, Dave Barnes, and Josh Kelley. Not sure whether you'll make the transition from your list to my boys, but I just thought I'd throw them out there for you! They're all on iTunes.
